Actually, it isn't a burl but is really called a purple-monkey-sticky-dishwasher-tree-bug lesion. You see, that is the home to that very rare kind of bug that lives under the bark from when the tree is very young. As the tree grows, it forms that shape because the bug under the bark chews away at the wood. True story. Mr Expert.
Lochlan, this is so sad. Mr Expert lives way, way , way over the ocean, and just does not know! When you come out west I will also show you another funny tree. It is a tree that has been chewed all the way through until it fell down...chewed by a big buck-toothed beaver. Yes, a real Canadian big, brown, buck-toothed beaver. None of this stinky, refrigerator bug stuff. No sirree! I can hardly wait to show you. Love, Grandpa.
That is called a burl. When you come out to our place I can show you a burl on an oak tree at the cabin.
